COZUMEL, Mexico
Hello again, today, we will talk about our beautiful paradise Cozumel, this Mayan name means “The swallows island”.
The story of the island is pretty interesting. Let me talk a little bit about this beauty.
Did you know? That it was part of Ecab province, this paradise before it was a sanctuary just for visiting Ix Chel, the goddess of the moon, who protects pregnant women.
Also, the people who came and visit the goddess adored the deity Kukulkaán (“the Feathered Serpent”), he is related to water & wind. The name Kukulkaán is to the Mayan civilization, but you may no it also with the name of Quetzalcoatl.
Teotihuacan named one of the major pyramids of the ancient world like him. Also, Chichen Izta named one of the wonders of the modern world has a very famous temple called Kukulkaán.
The Toltecs brought this god to our lands
Story
I would tell you a quick story about the island. The Mayan were farmers, fishermen, and great warriors, that ruled from Campeche to Guatemala over 2000 years.
In 1519 one of the ships of Hernán Cortés arrived in command of the Captain Pedro de Alvarado he pillages the town and the sanctuaries. When Cortés arrived, he started a campaign of reconciliation and liberation of the indigenous people that were in prison, he returns their belongings.
The marriage of Gonzalo Guerrero and the tribal chief of Chactemal (near Chetumal) daughter, created the first miscegenation family of Yucatan, for this reason, he supported and defended the town of the Spaniards.
At the beginning of the caste war, the island became more populated because the people run away from the violence.
The boardwalk was built in 1935. Nowadays it has a lot of restaurants where you can enjoy food & beverages with your friends and hang out. Also, it is really recommended for you to buy some souvenirs or handmade crafts in the main town. It is surrounded by shops. But wait, this is not all, you will be a delight with beautiful views of our crystalline and turquoise waters. The boardwalk is great for you to enjoy and have a really good time walking through.
For years it was a little fishing community. Until 1961 that Jacques Cousteau declared the island one of the BEST and most amazing places to scuba dive and snorkel. It was there when the world notice that we have the most impressive underwater flora and fauna.
LOCATION
Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico, its extension is of 39kms length and 12.8kms width, almost all of the island is cover by jungle. Incredible green colors encircle the island.
The island is located in the western Caribbean, 12 miles of the coastline of the Yucatan Peninsula, south of Cancun. They are several ways to arrive to the island, the easiest way to arrive is by plane, we have an International airport with all the facilities. Another way is to fly to Cancun, take a shuttle, arrive at Playa del Carmen, take the ferry and you will be arriving in 45 minutes.
If you would spend the night, I recommend you to have your reservation already placed. Cozumel offers a wide option of places to stay the night, with all-inclusive resorts and fantastic hotels or Airbnb for you to stay. All the options for you to choose depends if you are traveling with family, friends, a couple, for any occasion. I’m sure you will find something great that suits your preferences.
HEAVEN ON EARTH
Cozumel has a lot of beautiful places and areas that you can visit but, our biggest attraction is “El Cielo”, this beach is named because of the amount of starfish that you can observe in shallow waters. The beauty of this amazingly blue water can be confused with the sky. You can swim, snorkel and watch the marine life. You can also find hundreds of fish, stingrays and sea turtles. The better way to live this unforgettable experience, away from the crowds, is to use a private boat for rent.
But I have to tell you something right now El Cielo is closed, authorities close it because of conservation, we are ending with these beauties and we have to do something.
We still have the most amazing places and crystalline waters to take you and your loved ones. You will have the BEST time enjoying views, nature, surrounded by sand and waves.
Please, it is very important to remind you not to touch or take out the starfish, they die. Said that it is good to remind you not to use sunblock, it affects the whole ecosystem, my advice is to use long sleeves t-shirts and avoid the use of cream or sunblocks. We want this ecosystem to survive for a long time.
So, come to Cozumel, our paradise, we will be waiting for you!!!
