Bull Sharks
Hello hello!!!
I’m back with a pretty interesting topic. As a person that all her life where scared to sharks, believe me when you read this, you’ll understand them more.
Did you know that one of the only places in Mexico for you to dive with bull sharks is Playa del Carmen? If you are thinking on diving with them here you’ll find a lot of information about them.
Bull Shark Season
First of all it is very important for you to know that the bull shark season is from November to February but sometimes it vary a little. And the amounts of months sometimes it changes and a lot of this changes are because of human behavior, an interesting and sad fact is that in 2019 only came for two weeks, one theory is because they were fishing them. And when this happens they release a hormone to alerts the others about the danger, so they left.
Diving
Also, for you to go diving with them it is literally about 5 minutes from the shore by boat. So maybe even swimming you may pass the area where they at, but you can only see them by diving. Don’t be scared they’ve never been a shark attack in Playa del Carmen. Even this you shouldn’t take lightly to dive with them. Because we all know sharks are predator and they can be very aggressive even if they don’t like human flavor. But in this zone is pretty different and safe, because the bull shark that comes to Playa del Carmen are actually pregnant sharks. They are no males in this area, the males are the aggressive ones. The female pregnant shark are pretty calm and arrives to this area just to relax before they continue their journey to the place they give birth.
For this activity you should be certify because to watch them you have to go pretty deep, about 20 or 25 meters on open water, where currents can be very strong, so you need to stay together and please listen to your dive master and do what they tell you.
Type of Dives
Some of the diving tours are for you to feed them but please don’t take this tour. It’s very important for you to know the context of the bull shark’s arrival to Playa del Carmen. They started to come to this particular spot because it was were the fisherman were cleaning their fish. So, the bull sharks have always been fed by humans here.
Another fact is that fisherman fished bull sharks before and because the divers starts doing these tours, they stopped, because the diver’s companies pay the local fisherman a fee. The good news is that this is helping for the conservation.
Other places for feeding them, they literally throw a big bucket of fish down which can be very dangerous. But, the main reason against feeding marine life is that it’ll alter their behavior.
In a manner of speaking, observation tour is pretty calm and chill and feeding tour is more like a show, but I think more “dangerous”.
